JobMatch helps Jane achieve pub landlady ambition
22nd December 2008
A full time mum from Nelson has been given a pint of motivation and a dash of confidence to fulfil her lifelong dream of becoming a pub landlady – after completing training with the help of JobMatch.
Jane Phillips, 42, is thrilled to have become landlady of the Royal Oak in Nelson. She spent 22 years working as a full time mother, raising her family of three children, and after her youngest child moved to secondary school she decided it was time to get back to work. Jane knew just where to turn to get the support she needed - and contacted employment specialist JobMatch.
Jane said, “It was months ago that I had the JobMatch leaflet through the door. At the time I just put it in a drawer, but in my heart I knew that I would use it at some point.”
After deciding that running her own pub was what she really wanted to do, Jane approached a brewery and found out about the qualifications she would need. The next step was to contact JobMatch to see if they would be able to help.
Kylie Thomas, one of JobMatch’s specialist employment advisors, said, “Jane had a very clear idea of what she needed to do to get her ideal job and we were more than happy to help her in any way we could.”
JobMatch supported Jane as she worked through the relevant qualifications, including the British Institute Innkeepers Awarding Body (BIIAB) National Certificate for Personal License Holders (NCPLH) and the “Innside Knowledge – Business Skills for Pubs”. Jane will continue to receive support from the JobMatch employment liaison team while she is working.
Jane added, “I knew what I wanted to do, I just needed some help and JobMatch was brilliant. I wasn’t expecting them to be so helpful but they provided me with ongoing practical support as well as providing money towards training, which meant that I could afford everything I needed. Thanks to JobMatch and the support of my husband, David, I am back in work doing something for me.”
Welsh Assembly Government Deputy Minister for Regeneration, Leighton Andrews said: “The JobMatch initiative is having a positive impact throughout the Heads of the Valleys, benefiting local people and communities by ensuring we have trained people who are willing and able to fill the jobs being created from the ongoing regeneration of the area.”
Following a highly successful trial period in Blaenau Gwent, JobMatch has been extended to cover large areas of Torfaen County Borough, Caerphilly County Borough, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough and Rhondda Cynon Taf.
JobMatch is part of an integrated approach to sustainable regeneration of the former coal and steel industry areas, and the message to unemployed people of working age is: “You’re better off in a job.”
Jobseekers are urged to call JobMatch on 0800 066 5452.
Ends.
